Twenty-three-year old Maya Linnell was being treated for severe head injuries at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she was flown by Lifeflight helicopter, according to State Police spokesman Steve McCausland.

Troopers said Linnell was headed north on I-95 when her Honda Accord struck the bull moose just after 1:30 a.m. The impact tore the roof off the car.

Two other vehicles struck the dead animal which was in the roadway. The occupants of the other vehicles had minor injuries, McCausland said.

Old Town Police and the Howland Fire Department assisted troopers at the crash site.
