First Winter Storm of New Year Arrives Tuesday in Northern Maine [UPDATE]

Another winter storm is bearing down on Aroostook County as the new year gets underway, bringing with it significant snowfall, sleet and freezing rain Tuesday night and Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Winter Storm Warning for northern Maine from Medway to Madawaska.

Snowfall totals are expected to range from 6 to 10 inches north of Mars Hill. Areas to the south may see 3 to 5 inches of snow and sleet, but ice accumulations up to a quarter of an inch could cause problems.

The storm warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 4 p.m. Wednesday. Expect travel difficulties, with snow, sleet and a glaze of ice producing slippery conditions.

Ice buildup may cause tree limbs to snap with power outages possible. Forecasters say temperatures on Wednesday will range from 30°F in northern sections to the mid-30's in southern Aroostook with gusty winds early Wednesday.
