Fire Chief Mike Walton said the call came in at 5:40 p.m. Sixteen Hartland firefighters responded to the blaze on Highway 104, in the rural community about 15 kilometres east of Hartland.

Walton said a cigarette sparked the fire on a deck outside a downstairs apartment, and the flames spread up the wall. The tenants made it out of the building safely, and were using a garden hose to try to bring the blaze under control when crews arrived.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and confine the structural damage to a single downstairs apartment, Chief Walton said. There was smoke damage throughout the 4-unit building.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 8 o'clock Tuesday evening.

Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross have been assisting all 11 tenants with emergency aid including lodging, food and clothing.
