The Mars Hill Fire department responded to the call on the Bubar Road around 8:30 a.m. Fire Chief Darrell Wilson said Joe Rideout and his girlfriend were living in the rental home with a seven-month-old boy. Rideout was moving furniture into the home when he spotted the fire.

It took firefighters from Mars Hill, Blaine and Bridgewater just over three hours to bring the blaze under control.

The American Red Cross is offering assistance to the family, who lost everything in the fire. The home, owned by Troy Foster of Augusta, was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
