Fire Destroys Garage, Caribou Family’s Home Saved

Firefighters were able to save a home in Caribou Monday night after a fire broke out in an adjacent garage.

The Caribou Fire Department received the call at 9:18 p.m., according to Fire Chief Scott Susi. Crews arrived at a residence at 768 Access Highway, just north of the city, to find the two-story garage fully engulfed. Firefighters immediately turned their attention to the home, which was about 4 feet from the burning garage, Susi said.

About 30 firefighters from the Caribou and Limestone Departments worked to bring the blaze under control, and were on scene until close to midnight. The family was evacuated with no injuries and returned to their home after it was deemed safe.

Damage to the home was cosmetic, according to the fire chief. The garage was a complete loss. Chief Susi said the Fire Marshal's Office was notified. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The Presque Isle Fire Department provided mutual aid at the Caribou fire station.
