The Monticello Fire Department responded around 6:00 a.m. to the fire at 422 U.S. Route 1, across the road from the Monticello Country Store. Members of the Littleton and Bridgewater Fire Departments assisted in fighting the blaze which completely destroyed the older 2 1/2 story structure.

Smoke could be seen billowing through the town as firefighters worked to contain the fire. There was no damage to any other structures along Main Street. Traffic on Route 1 was backed up for several hours.

A man who was living in the building made it out safely. There were no injuries.

Mike Lynds of the Monticello Fire Department tells us the State Fire Marshall's Office was on the scene late Thursday  morning working to determine the cause of the blaze.
