A fire at 423 Main Street in Presque Isle Sunday afternoon damaged an apartment building adjacent to Star City IGA.

The Presque Isle Fire Department responded to the fire shortly before 3:20 p.m., according to Capt. Vince Baldwin. Crews from Mapleton, Castle Hill, Chapman and Easton provided mutual aid at the scene. Caribou Fire Dept. covered the station.

The fire started on the second floor in apartment number 9 and spread into the attic, Baldwin said. The tenant was away at the time. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the attic to extinguish the blaze.

Ten tenants in the apartment building and employees and customers at Star City IGA were evacuated. There were no injuries, Baldwin said.

Most of the damage was confined to the single apartment and a portion on the attic. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
