Walking Dead companion series Fear The Walking Dead wrapped up its second season with a few hints of the world leaning farther into the zombie apocalypse, but fans will always wonder if the two series would ever cross over. Robert Kirkman even offered a tantalizing hint at New York Comic-Con, suggesting a Fear-ful origin for one of the comics’ current villains.

Take this with a significant grain of salt, as producers of The Walking Dead and Fear have repeatedly dispelled the notion of crossover, though creator Kirkman offered a curious quote with regard to the comics’ current antagonists, the flesh-wearing “Whisperers.” Asked how the group came up with their unique trait of wearing the skins of the dead, Kirkman said:

I feel like it’s something that probably evolved over time. Maybe they were putting blood all over their faces and were walking around in Mexico and went, ‘Oh, it would probably be better if we just used skin.’

Naturally, the Mexico portion of the quote calls directly to Fear The Walking Dead, which makes much more regular habit of its characters covered in zombie guts for camouflage. Kirkman replied “no comment” when pressed for a direct link between Fear and the Whisperers, but the tease was definitely intentional.

AMC’s Walking Dead has a long way to go before introducing its own version of The Whisperers (we’ve only just gotten to Negan), but it could make for an interesting link, if Fear ends up creating the Whisperers, or at least highlighting their origins before the group reaches the main series.

Fear Season 3 will debut in 2017, while The Walking Dead proper will return on October 23.
