On Tuesday, the Academy released their list of all the film scores eligible for a Best Original Score Oscar this year, but three of 2016’s biggest movies were absent. Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, and Martin Scorsese’s Silence were all shut out of the competition because the first two used pre-existing music, and the last wasn’t deemed “substantial” enough.

In the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s eligibility guidelines, Variety reports, one of the rules states that a film’s score, “shall not be eligible if it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music, or it has been diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs or any music not composed specifically for the film by the submitting composer.” The piece that bookends Arrival and serves as a kind of emotional gut-punch is Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight,” which has been used before in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Johan Johansson composed the bulk of Arrival’s soundtrack, but it was determined that the voters wouldn’t be able to separate his compositions from the other without it influencing their votes.

Manchester by the Sea has a similar problem. The majority of the film is set to pre-existing classical background music, so the Academy deemed Lesley Barber’s original contributions “not substantial enough.” Also suffering from lack of substance, apparently, is the score for Silence, composed by Kim Allen and Kathryn Kluge.

So that leaves us with Mica Levi’s score for Jackie, which made waves earlier this month upon the film’s release, and also John Williams’ work for The BFG, Michael Giacchino’s for Rogue One, Mick Cave and Warren Ellis’ work for Hell or High Water, Justin Hurwitz’s for La La Land, and Mark Mancina’s for Moana, as well as a ton of others.
