We are all trying to do our part to protect our environment; we recycle, try to live ‘green’ and are attempting to reduce our carbon footprint. We’re trying to protect the world we live in for future generations. This is what Earth Day is all about.

Earth Day was originally founded in 1970 and was originally aimed at creating a mass environmental movement. According to history.com, Senator Gaylord Nelson was the brains behind Earth Day and it began as a "national teach-in on the environment" and was held on April 22 to maximize the number of students that could be reached on university campuses. Nelson’s goal was to raise public awareness of air and water pollution.

Earth Day celebrations have grown tremendously since 1970. Today, the Earth Day Network collaborates with over 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries. According to EDN, more than 1 billion people are involved in Earth Day activities, making it "the largest secular civic event in the world."
