Three people escaped unharmed from a pre-dawn fire Thursday at their home in the rural community of New Zion, New Brunswick.

The blaze on Highway 10, just south on Minto extensively damaged the two-storey house. Fire crews contended with extreme wind chills as they brought the fire under control.

Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross have assisted the couple and their adult daughter with emergency purchases of clothing, food and other basics, according to Red Cross spokesman Dan Bedell. Insurance took care of emergency lodging for the family.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
