Driver Swerves to Avoid Moose and Crashes Through Woodland Home
Police and emergency personnel responded to a 9-1-1 call Thursday night after a car went off the road and drove into a home in Woodland.
According to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Sheldon Ketch called to report that a vehicle had struck his home on the New Sweden Road and that the woman driving the car was unable to get out.
Sheriff’s Deputies, the Caribou Fire Department and Caribou Ambulance Service arrived to find a 2003 Dodge Intrepid almost completely inside Ketch’s home. The driver, 20-year-old Makaila Bourgoine of New Sweden, was wearing her seat belt and was not injured.
Deputies say Bourgoine was traveling north on Route 161 around 10:00 p.m. when she swerved to avoid a moose in the roadway. Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall said Bourgoine lost control of her car, crossed into the southbound lane, went off the road and crashed into the northeast corner of Ketch’s home.
There was significant damage to the house and vehicle. No charges have been filed.
