Maine State Police say 53-year-old Gerald Kinney of Caribou was traveling east on the Jemtland Road around 3:30 p.m. when his 2002 Dodge pickup veered into the oncoming lane. In an effort to avoid the collision, 29-year-old Patrick Caron of Fort Kent, who was driving west in a 1997 Ford utility truck, swerved to the left and attempted to stop.

Kinney’s truck then swerved back into its lane and the two vehicles crashed head-on, according to Corporal Chuck Michaud. The impact ripped the front driver's side wheels off from both vehicles and caused other significant damage.

Kinney was transported by Caribou Fire and Ambulance to Cary Medical Center. He was treated for minor injuries and released, Michaud said. Caron and his passenger were not injured in the crash.

As a result of the investigation Kinney was summoned to Caribou Court for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Michaud said.

State Trooper Adam Stoutamyer was assisted at the scene Saturday by Warden Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Maine Warden Service.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
