Cuba Gooding Sr., lead singer with 70s soul group The Main Ingredient, was found dead in a car in Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles today (April 20). According to reports, the 72-year old’s body was found in a silver Jaguar before 1:10 p.m. in the 22100 block of Ventura Boulevard. Gooding was the father of actors Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Omar Gooding.

Gooding joined The Main Ingredient in 1971, and scored a major hit with 1973s “Everybody Plays the Fool.” The group would have other successful singles like “Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely” and “Happiness Is Around the Bend,” working with hitmakers like Leon Ware and Stevie Wonder. Gooding would record two solo albums for Motown, and was a frequent supporter of his sons on red carpets and at awards shows.

Gooding later reformed The Main Ingredient as a touring act, performing shows with Jerome Jackson, and Stanley Alston up until his death. He leaves behind his wife Shirley and four children.

Police are still investigating the cause of his death, but say there was no sign of any shooting at the scene.
