Today marks the first day of December, the month in which movie obsessives must succumb to awards-season fever and meticulously keep track of which nomination went to who, which organization snubbed which movie, and what the difference between AMPAS and HFPA is. As the New York Film Critics’ Circle deliberates on their picks for the year’s slate of awards, the Broadcast Film Critics Association has unveiled their full list of nominees for the Critics’ Choice Awards and kicked the festivities off. The Critics’ Choice Awards has historically held a fraction of the Oscars‘ or Golden Globes‘ prestige, but compensated with a more eclectic lineup of nominated films that adds a most welcome element of surprise. This year’s no different, mixing some unanticipated contenders with the usual heavyweights.

La La Land came out on top with a whopping 12 nominations, including key nods in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Song, Best Screenplay, and both the Best Actor and Actress races. Both Moonlight and Arrival scored 10 nominations, with Moonlight dominating the acting categories as Arrival scored big with technical races. Noticeably absent from the list is Martin Scorsese’s religious epic Silence, which only screened for critics for the first time on Wednesday, as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which a grand total of nobody has seen as of now. (Last year, Star Wars: Episode VII didn’t make the cutoff deadline for consideration, but a special exception was made and the film picked up a handful of nominations. No such special treatment is apparent this year, at least so far.)

Check out the full list of nominees below, and mark down December 11 on your calendars — that’s when T.J. Miller hosts the official awards telecast on A&E.
