The Mars Hill Fire Department responded to the blaze at the two-story house at 7 Miller Street around 11:30 Sunday night.

Fire Chief Darrell Wilson said it appears the fire started in the garage and spread to the home. A couple and a young child were able to make it out safely after smelling smoke.

The Bridgewater Fire Department provided mutual aid. Crews were on scene until about 3:30 Monday morning.

Chief Wilson said the family lost almost everything in the fire. The local chapter of the American Red Cross was notified and is providing emergency help for the family.

State Fire Marshal's Office investigator is in Mars Hill today to help determine the cause of the fire.
