Crash on Route 1 in Caribou Seriously Injures Local Man
A 21-year-old man remains hospitalized with multiple injuries following a single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning on Route 1 in Caribou.
The Caribou Police Department received a 911 call reporting the accident shortly after 4:30 a.m., according to Police Chief Mike Gahagan. Officer Kegan McPherson and Caribou Fire and Ambulance responded to the call.
Police say Joseph "Joey" Guimond of Connor Township was heading north in his pickup truck when he drifted into the southbound lane. The truck went off the road and hit a utility pole.
Guimond suffered multiple injuries in the crash but was able to get out of the truck and crawl to the highway to get help, police say. He was transported by ambulance to Cary Medical Center in Caribou and later flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Chief Gahagan said Guimond was wearing a seat belt, which probably saved his life. The truck was demolished in the crash. The accident remains investigation.
