Congress woman Chellie Pingree told the public the Navy has awarded contracts worth over $2.8 billion to Bath Iron Works. If the fifth destroyer goes through it will put the amount over $3.5 billion.

In order for the 5th ship to be built the Navy has to come up with $304 million. Due to sequestration, there is uncertainty about the construction of a 5th ship.

Three Zumwalt-class destroyers are also expected to come out of BIW late next year or possibly in 2015.
