Steve Clifford is one of two Mainers who are NBA head coaches and it appears Clifford will be coaching the Charlotte Hornets for at least three more years.

According to ESPN and the Charlotte Observer, Clifford has reached a 3-year contract extension that keeps him coaching the Hornets through the 2018-2019 season.

This season is the final year of his current contract and Charlotte is off to an 8-6 start despite some key injuries. He led the Hornets to the playoffs in his first season, the team dropped off a bit last season but Clifford has a great reputation in the NBA and with openings likely in places like Houston and Los Angeles(Lakers), it appears Charlotte management wanted to get a deal done.

After starting out the season 0-3, the Hornets have gone 8-3 and play the Washington Wizards tonight.

After playing his college ball at UMaine Farmington, Clifford began his coaching career at Woodland High School.

South Portland's Brett Brown is the other Mainer in the NBA head coaching ranks. He coaches the Philadelphia 76ers.
