After delivering two disappointing Spider-Man movies, director Marc Webb recruited Captain America for his return to the intimate realm of indie dramas, free from the tyranny of colorful super-villains, CGI and spandex. The first trailer for Gifted features real people dealing with real problems, like hunky Chris Evans struggling to raise his niece, who just happens to be a child genius — which is still kind of like a superhero story, right?

There’s something a bit syrupy about this trailer for Gifted, but whether it’s the real deal or artificially sweetened remains to be seen. Evans stars as Frank Adler, a man who is raising his young niece following the untimely death of his sister. It’s difficult enough to raise a kid, and even more difficult to raise someone else’s kid — and even more difficult when that kid is a prodigy. Gifted looks like it could be quite charming (Jenny Slate!), but there’s a fine line between poignant and maudlin; hopefully Webb’s latest is the former.

Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy - his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) - in a coastal town in Florida. Frank's plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.

Despite the impression you might get from that trailer, Gifted is not an awards season contender — it hits theaters on April 12, 2017.
