Maine-made wreaths have begun the annual journey from Washington County down to near Washington, DC. A project called Wreaths Across America kicked off a convoy from Maine to Virginia Sunday.  It's being led by Grand Marshal Candy Martin, the 2016 president of the American Gold Star Mothers.

Canada's National Day of the Acadians was chosen by the first national convention of Acadians in 1881 in Memramcook, New Brunswick. The 15th of August was chosen because it was the Feast of the Assumption, a Catholic holy day celebrating the Virgin Mary. The holiday was deemed necessary to help showcase Acadians as a distinct culture.

Friday, July 1 is Canada Day,  Fête du Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867 enactment of the Constitution Act which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire.
