A Carmel man was charged with assault on an officer after police responded to a medical emergency involving the suspect.

Penobscot County deputies Thursday night were sent to East Court in Carmel for a medical emergency involving Robert Anthony Bell, 27.

While deputies attempted to assist Bell, he became combative, retrieved a shot gun and discharged a round, the sheriff's department said in a news release Friday.

Bell then put the weapon down and was subdued by deputies and taken into custody.

According to the release, a deputy was injured while trying to subdue the man.

Bell was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment, where he allegedly assaulted another deputy.

Bell was released from the hospital Friday morning and is currently being held at the Penobscot County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail.

Bell is charged with assault on an officer, and deputies say he could face additional charges.
