According to Sgt. Brian Harris, Jacob Lavoie was driving a 2004 Volvo around 11 p.m., when he lost control on a corner, and went off the opposite side of the road and into a ditch.  The Volvo struck several trees and rolled onto its side, coming to rest against a tree on the banks of the Little Madawaska River.  The car was significantly damaged in the crash.

Harris said the investigation revealed that Lavoie allegedly did not have permission to have the vehicle and fled the scene after the accident.  He later turned himself in at the Caribou Police Department.  Lavoie was charged with operating after suspension, leaving the scene of an accident and unauthorized use of property.  He sustained minor injuries in the crash that did not require treatment.

State Trooper Andrew Levesque was the investigating officer and was assisted at the scene by the Aroostook County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol and Caribou Fire and Ambulance.  The Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded as well, due to proximity to the river.

State Police said speed was a factor in the crash. The investigation continues.
