FREDERICTON, New Brunswick (AP) — A Canadian man charged with killing two police officers and two civilians is telling judges he should be "exonerated" because of temporary insanity.

The four were shot dead Aug. 10 outside an apartment complex in the eastern city of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The shooting struck a nerve in a country that has been roiled by several instances of mass violence this year.

Matthew Raymond says he has evidence that will show his innocence.

The 48-year-old Raymond said in court Monday he shouldn't be in custody and should acquitted "right now."

He ignored his defense lawyer's plea to sit down.

Raymond has not yet made a formal plea. His case will return to court next week to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
