As far as movie premises go, you can do a lot worse than “Groundhog Day meets a second, other thing.” That line of thinking brought us the ingenious Edge of Tomorrow (Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers), Nacho Vigalondo’s bewitching Timecrimes (Groundhog Day meets The Strangers), and the eminently underrated Source Code (Groundhog Day meets Jake Gyllenhaal hunting a terrorist inside of the internet, I think). The new trailer for the upcoming concept-drama Before I Fall makes no bones about its premise, a marriage of the classic Bill Murray comedy and an after-school special about bullying — whether it can hold its own among the previously mentioned films, only time will tell.

Zoey Deutch, coming in hot off of a strong 2016 with roles in Dirty Grandpa and Everybody Wants Some!!, stars as average high-school senior Samantha Kingston. She and her friends happily pass their final days before college with parties, boy-smooching, and playful boob-flashing when locked out of the car. (Lady-readers: Is this a real thing that happens? I am dubious.) But on a ride home from another classic parent-unsupervised bash, a truck lays Samantha and her pals out — until the next morning, when Samantha awakes to find its not next morning at all. She relives the same day over and over again, searching for a way to get her life moving in a forward motion once again. Perhaps it has something to do with the plainly-attired social pariah she and her pals harassed?

The film arrives in theaters on March 3 courtesy of director Ry Russo-Young, a fixture in the indie world last credited with the feature Nobody Walks in 2012. She appears to be shifting modes here, moving from character-driven drama to what might qualify as a thriller.
