Ariana Grande Sued for Copyright Infringement Over ‘One Last Time’
Ariana Grande is the latest in an ever-growing list of pop stars being sued over alleged copyright infringement.
Songwriter Alex Greggs claims the sonic similarities between his track “Takes All Night,” -- which was recorded and released by Skye Stevens in 2012 -- and Grande’s 2014 hit “One Last Time” are too close to count as mere coincidence.
Greggs — who’s worked with some of pop’s biggest stars, ranging from Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake to both Michael and Janet Jackson -- alleges Grande and her songwriters directly copied the track’s hook and the lyrics, “take(s) [or taking] you home,” according to TMZ.
Greggs is reportedly suing for a cut of the track's profits.
Suing over alleged copyright infringement appears to be in vogue this summer, as several of Grande’s contemporaries are facing similar lawsuits.
Indie rock outfit Sleigh Bells filed a complaint against Demi Lovato, UMG Recordings and producers Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub earlier this week (August 22). The duo alleges aspects of their 2010 tracks “Infinity Guitars” and “Riot Rhythm” were directly lifted and implemented into Lovato’s 2014 track “Stars,” — a claim Sleigh Bells first made public on Twitter back in November 2015.
Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, meanwhile, has been hit with two lawsuits this year, both alleging copyright infringement. The heirs of the late Ed Townsend — who co-wrote the lyrics and musical composition for Marvin Gaye’s famous hit “Let’s Get It On” — claim Sheeran copied aspects of the famous track for his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud.”
And just two months earlier, songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard — in conjunction with their publishing company HaloSongs — brought a $20 million lawsuit against the “Don’t” singer, accusing him of ripping off their 2009 track “Amazing” for Sheeran's song “Photograph."
