Amandla Stenberg Shares the Beautiful Compliment She Received From Beyonce
In the September issue of Glamour magazine, the young actress opens up about the touching compliment she received from the music icon while on set filming her cameo in the "Freedom" segment of the Lemonade video.
"Beyonce comes up to me, and she goes, ‘Hello, Amandla. I just wanted to tell you I want Blue to be just like you,'" she recalled, adding that the moment felt like "the hands of God were like gently caressing my entire body and soul, like I felt like I had reached nirvana..."
Understandably, she found herself a little flustered.
She added, laughing, "I was like, 'Thank you very much.' I think I said something really lame and gushing about her to her face!"
The 17-year-old also dished on what it was like getting the call to be in Beyonce's now culturally iconic visual album, as well as the emotional impact of filming on a former slave plantation in the deep south.
"I just kind of got this phone call," Stenberg explained. "It was like, 'Go to New Orleans; Beyonce wants you there...' I wasn't going to pass down that opportunity."
While traveling south on a tour bus with a bunch of other "awesome black women" hand-selected by Beyonce, Stenberg recounted how she and Zendaya hit it off.
"Zendaya and I kind of sat next to each other and like gossiped about what would happen, like we were so excited, we were kind of whispering in each other's ears," she said.
Once shooting began, the young actress revealed that she finally felt the poignancy and cultural weight of what they were creating.
"It was really a powerful experience because we were shooting on this former slave plantation, and being in that space, like reclaiming that space, in an empowering way, where we were creating art that services and like promotes the beauty of people of color was really trippy," she gushed.
