In a turn of events that gives evidence that maybe the world isn’t so terrible after all, Rooney Mara and Adam Driver are going to be starring in a movie together. They’ve both been on the up and up for a while, Mara giving incredible performances in dramas like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and last year’s Carol, and Driver ping-ponging back and forth between franchise and indie, as he’ll star in the next two Star Wars episodes and was also lauded for his a critically acclaimed performance in this year’s Paterson. The two have signed on to play lovers in Annette.

But if you think that’s all the news, better settle in, because there’s more. Not only are Driver and Mara finally going to star in a movie together, Variety learned that the movie will be the English-language debut of director Leos Carax, helmer of Holy Motors — aka the insane French-German fantastical drama about a man being driven around to do all kinds of odd jobs, from becoming a motion-capture video game alien to kidnapping a model from a photoshoot to performing an impromptu musical number in a church with the aid of an accordion band. It seems like Carax has caught the bug, because Annette, Variety has confirmed, is going to be a musical.

But wait, there’s more! Rihanna, yes, Rihanna, is rumored to have a small role in the film as well, which makes perfect sense, since it’ll be full of musical numbers and all. Rihanna recently had a role in Luc Besson’s Valerian, so it looks like she’s down for whatever weird, crazy ideas this decade’s weird, crazy directors can throw at her. Count us very excited for pretty much everything about Annette, which is scheduled to begin filming next spring.
