Let's Talk Month is a national public education campaign celebrated in October and coordinated by Advocates for Youth.

Let's Talk Month is an opportunity for community agencies, religious institutions, businesses, schools, media, parent groups and health providers to plan programs and activities which encourage parent/child communication about sexuality.

ACAP’s Improving Outcomes for Youth program, sponsored by the Department of Health & Human Services, has partnered with New Beginnings & Maine Family Planning to sponsor, “Let’s Talk, Aroostook,” on October 13th from 10 am to 1 pm. The event will occur at the Sargent Family Community Center in Presque Isle and is open to all parents, caregivers, teens (14+), and young adults.

“Let’s Talk, Aroostook” encourages healthy self-esteem, self-advocacy, communication and healthy relationship skills, while promoting risk reduction and prevention education. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes and earn incentives by completing activities in the gymnasium while parents and caregivers have separate sessions, inclusive of faith-based and LGBTQ communities. All attendees will be served lunch.

The Maine CDC issued a Public Health Advisory in early September due to dramatic increases in Syphilis and Gonorrhea within our state. Now remains a good time to help our youth develop the perspective and character they need to avoid high-risk behavior. From intravenous drug use to risky sexual behavior, social media bullying, and binge drinking, our youth need tools to equip them for the threats that now face young adults.

“Let’s Talk, Aroostook” is a free event suitable for youth and young adults ages 14-24. To register, visit https://aroostook-county-action-program.ticketleap.com/lets-talk-aroostook/. The first 50 youth to register will receive a free t-shirt. For more information, please contact, Jenny Paul, Project Director, at 764-3721.
