2016 National Acadian Day is August 15th

Canada's National Day of the Acadians was chosen by the first national convention of Acadians in 1881 in Memramcook, New Brunswick. The 15th of August was chosen because it was the Feast of the Assumption, a Catholic holy day celebrating the Virgin Mary. The holiday was deemed necessary to help showcase Acadians as a distinct culture. 

The following statement was issued by New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant on the occasion of National Acadian Day:

"Every year, Aug. 15 is synonymous with festivities designed to celebrate the Acadian culture in all its splendour and vitality.

As a people, Acadians are known for their determination and courage.

We must all be proud of the diversity and the different cultures that contribute to the economic growth and vitality of New Brunswick.

Many celebrations of Acadia will be held throughout the province on Aug. 15, and I invite all New Brunswickers to take part in those activities.
